Welcome. My name is Matthew and I am a BACP-registered psychotherapist working online and in-person in Finsbury Park and Walthamstow.
about me

how i work
I provide psychotherapy to adults, available on an open-ended or time-limited basis, with sessions usually held weekly.
I offer a supportive, non-judgemental, and confidential space to reflect on your patterns of relating to yourself and others.
The therapeutic process allows you to gain insight into how these patterns developed and explore avenues for meaningful change.
Therapy can help to address a specific problem or to cultivate greater self-awareness. Working collaboratively, we can make sense of whatever it is that you are going through.
Whether you are seeking therapy to work through particular difficulties or to explore unknown parts of yourself, I adopt a tailored approach based on your individual needs.
expertise
I have particular experience working with adults dealing with issues related to depression, anxiety, relationships, trauma, self-esteem, body-image, motivation, career, spirituality, and creativity.
In my capacity as a doctoral researcher, I have published and reviewed academic papers on issues related to psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and philosophy of mind.
Session structure
Our initial sessions will provide us with the opportunity to think together about your reasons for coming to therapy and how we might approach future sessions.
Thereafter, the invitation is for you to speak freely through any thoughts, emotions, behaviours, dreams, and fantasies which come to mind or may be troubling you. I will provide light direction to keep you accountable and feeling supported throughout the process.
Psychotherapy tends to be longer-term and open-ended to make space for deeper change.
We may also decide at the outset that a shorter-term, fixed amount of sessions would be more appropriate. This may be indicated where you are looking to work through a particular life problem or dilemma.
My approach
Given that much of our mental life goes on outside of our awareness, we often find ourselves thinking, behaving, and feeling in ways which are hard to understand or exercise control over.
My approach to therapy is psychodynamic. In essence, this model is aimed at bringing awareness to lesser-known parts of ourselves, offering an opening towards a greater sense of self-knowledge, integration, and flexibility.
In this way, the process of therapy facilitates us becoming more fully ourselves, and more present and alive to our feelings, thoughts, and bodily states.
The therapeutic relationship is an important aspect of the psychodynamic approach. Past patterns of relating tend to continue to affect us until their unconscious influence is brought into awareness in the context of a new relationship. Psychotherapy offers the security and stability to thoughtfully and intentionally enter into this form of therapeutic relationship.
Fees
My standard fee is £65 for a 50-minute session. I also offer limited spaces at concessionary rates depending on financial need.
